self-catering house Poland meals out
Typical Polish meal out on holiday in Poland of a shashlik (kebab), chips and a mixed grated salad (zestaw surowek).

Rent a large 5 bedroom house to sleep 8 to 10 people in the small town of Rabka-Zdroj which is one hour's drive from Cracow and about 35 minutes from the ski centre of Zakopane. The house is on the edge of town surrounded by gentle wooded hills, such as Maciejowa which is popular with walkers and where there is skiing during the winter. The town also has an ice skating rink for more winter only fun.

The house is on 4 levels (lots of stairs). There are 5 bedrooms - 3 of which are en-suite. A family bathroom has a jacuzzi bath. There are 3 living areas; sitting room with widescreen TV, dining room table, 3 piece leather suite and TV, log cabin leisure room with an open fire and bar. Almost each room opens on to a balcony. The views are wonderful. Sit with a drink in the evening and watch the sun go down over Rabka (sunsets in Rabka).

The house is in a peaceful location. Local people do keep chickens (including cockerels) and dogs, so these are the noises you are likley to hear.

The house is centrally heated by gas over which you have full control.

skiing winterGetting out and about in southern Poland

We recommend that you hire a car to obtain the maximum pleasure from a holiday in south Poland. There are numerous interesting places to visit and lots of national parks for beautiful places to walk but it is not easy to get to them by public transport. There is a railway station in town and it's fine for trips to Nowy Targ or Zakopane but the journey to Cracow takes about 4.5 hours because the route is convoluted and the train stops at numerous small villages en-route.

There are small buses that run back and forth from the outdoor bus station to Cracow, Zakopane and various other destinations. These are cheap to use but do not run late and there is no space for luggage if you wanted to use one as an airport transfer. For airport transfers, you would need to catch a Zakopane to Cracow coach which does has luggage space and stops on the other side of the town. See Travel to Rabka Zdroj

Eating out

Eating out is relatively inexpensive. The cheapest places to eat are called Bar Mleczny and serve good basic 3 course meals in simple surroundings. There is a whole range of places to eat up to gourmet in Cracow. Restaurants do not charge for corkage on wine so you will find drinks quite cheap.
