church rabka zdroj

A memorial stone at the site of the Jewish Cemetary and massacre of Jews during World War II by the Nazis.

A place of sadness - memorial of man's inhumanity to man

Turn up the country lane on the right just before the school for the blind in ulica Słoneczna, and follow the path. At the fork, take the left route and you will arrive at this small Jewish cemetary and memorial to those Jews murdered by Nazis in World War II.

jewish memorial'

This stone is a silent monument to the Jewish people who were murdered at this site. Before World War II, Jews accounted for nearly a quarter of the population of Rabka, where Jewish businesses were an integral part of this vibrant spa town. In 1940 a Nazi execution school was established in the town. A flag, emblazoned with the swastika, was raised above the building and fear descended upon the town. Jewish families from Rabka, and surrounding towns, were brought to the school and executed and Rabka was stripped of centuries of Jewish tradition.

Acceptance of all

One thing this small cemetary reminds me of is how many people reject other people simply because of prejudice and ignorance.

The only way forward in peace to accept each man as our brother, irrespective of colour, faith, or status. You don't need to adopt him - just be pleasant, polite and treat him decently.

We welcome people of all races and faiths. Let Rabka truly live up to its motto as 'the town of the children of the world'.
